Lockdown Lent in Saxtead At last Covid cases are dropping, the icy blast from Siberia has retreated, the snowdrops are out and our much loved windmill is turning in the brilliant sunshine! This Lent, the Diocese of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich Lightwave Project is encouraging us to do something kind every day for 40 days: a kind word of encouragement, a telephone call to a friend or neighbour who lives alone, or why not send or forward a photograph that will bring back happy memories shared? John Hutton is also very kindly hosting a collection for a hamper to thank the teachers and staff at Earl Soham Primary School who have not only had to adjust to online lessons and classes for the children of essential workers during this pandemic, but now face the challenge of ensuring the younger children catch up in the 3Rs. The money collected will buy delicious goods from Hutton’s shelves and will be delivered to the school before the Easter holidays, together with thankyou cards posted in the golden post-box. November News from Saxtead
The fallen tree on The Green has been
removed very neatly, the interminable water
works seems to have ended, and Autumn has
arrived in Saxtead. Here is our Parrotia
Persica ablaze with colour. Deborah Sharman
kindly hosted the coffee morning in her
conservatory, safely distanced, for six people.
Our normal larger group was sadly missed.
Don‘t forget the support group which is still
taking calls for prescriptions, post and
emergency supplies.

October News from Saxtead

The glorious Indian Summer has ended in Monsoon rains and gale force winds, alarming and drenching my poor chickens, and tearing up an ancient lime tree on The Green by its roots. I hope very much that the weather will have improved by Sunday when we welcome our new Priest in Charge, The Revd. Canon Chris Davey, who is taking Eucharist in All Saints Church, Saxtead, at 6.30. I was privileged to attend Chris’s Licensing and Installation in St Michaels Framlingham last Wednesday, 23rd September. Archdeacon Jeannette Gosney gave a moving and inspirational address reminding Chris of his call by God to share the joy of his faith in Jesus with his parishioners, with the help of The Holy Spirit. We look forward to a long, happy and fruitful time of blessings in our benefice.

Sept News and Proposed Memorial Wildlife Garden Plans

24 August 2020

News of Saxtead Church’s Proposed Memorial Wildlife Garden
Since long before The Rev Mark Sanders left we have been discussing cheering up the Memorial Plot, and since lockdown we have forged ahead with plans. I attach a photograph of the present state of the plot (invisible) and the proposed herbal planting. At our last meeting of the PCC in 2019 it was again remarked upon that people were finding it difficult to find the plot, and then bleak when they did. Magnificent proposals were considered from a professional garden planning company but the cost would have been prohibitive until we have completed the works for a water supply, toilet and kitchenette, at present with the DAC for approval. So we have come up with this plan as a cheap and attractive alternative, which would not preclude doing something more ambitious later. Moreover we have plans to designate our graveyard as an ECO friendly area and the plants chosen will attract butterflies. We also have plans for bird boxes. Best wishes,Christina

July 2020 News from Saxtead
The slow pace imposed on us by the lockdown
has seemed to make each glorious phase this
spring far more memorable than before. The
whole length of Saxtead Green has been a
carpet of celandine dotted with cowslips, giving
way to a sea of buttercups, followed by a
hundred thousand oxeye daisies together with
the delicate lacework of the cow parsley swaying
in the wind. Our beautiful ancient church, All
Saints, Saxtead, is now open again, but for the
time being only for private prayer. In order to
follow government Covid-19 safety guidelines we
ask that only four visitors enter the church at any
one time, and that they wipe the door catches on
leaving with the wipes provided.
Percolation tests in Saxtead!
No this is not some strange coffee test in the
village. Rather some holes in the Churchyard
with proper permission. The PCC at Saxtead is
considering moving onto the long hoped for
Phase 2 which means considering a simple
‘kitchen’ facility and the possibility of a toilet at
the back of the Church. Part of this means
checking the soil capacity for drainage.
The PCC thank Bill Roberts and John Speight for
digging 3 holes and testing how the water
seeped (percolated) away. To the best of my
knowledge they didn’t even have a cup of coffee
while doing so! The PCC will learn about the
results at the meeting next week. Christina
